What is a fare class?
A fare class is the single-letter (sometimes letter-plus) booking code on your ticket — such as Y, B, M, V or O — that marks which price bucket you bought inside a cabin, not merely whether you are in economy or business.
Cabins are the physical product (economy, premium economy, business, first). Fare classes are inventory buckets inside those cabins. Deep-discount economy might be L or V; fully flexible economy might be Y. The same seat map row can sell in many classes. Your e-ticket receipt and GDS line show the class; airline apps sometimes bury it under “fare brand” names like Basic, Classic or Flex.
Fare class drives change/cancel penalties, upgrade waitlist priority, mediating booking codes on codeshares, and miles or tier points earned as a percentage of distance or spend. How do you read fare class on a booking?
Open the e-ticket or “manage booking” fare details: look for a one-letter code next to the flight number. That letter — not the pretty brand name alone — is what loyalty charts and many change desks use.
Example: two passengers in the same economy cabin — one on V class Basic, one on Y class Flexible. The V passenger may pay for seats and bags and earn fewer miles; the Y passenger may change dates for a fee or free and earn closer to full credit.
